The new MTIA chip has shifted to a smaller 5nm process from the 7nm of its predecessor, meaning it can house smaller components, leading to a more compact and efficient design. This next-gen chip also features a larger size, more processing cores, increased power consumption (90W compared to 25W), double the internal memory (128MB), and operates at a higher clock speed (1.35GHz).

Meta recently revealed its latest development in AI technology, pushing forward its ambitious goal to excel in the generative AI domain. The company has allocated a significant portion of its multi-billion dollar investment in AI towards developing custom hardware, specifically chips designed for operating and refining its AI models.

The announcement of the new Meta Training and Inference Accelerator (MTIA) comes shortly after Intel’s disclosure of its new AI accelerator hardware. This second-generation MTIA chip, an advancement over the previous year’s model, is tailored for tasks like sorting and suggesting advertisements on Meta platforms such as Facebook.

The upgraded MTIA chip, manufactured using a 5nm process, contrasts with its 7nm predecessor, featuring a larger physical size and more processing cores. Despite its increased power consumption of 90W compared to 25W, it offers double the internal memory and operates at a higher clock speed.

Meta has deployed the advanced MTIA across 16 data center regions, claiming it delivers triple the performance of its former version. However, specifics on this performance improvement are limited to comparisons based on four main models.

In a blog post, Meta highlighted the efficiency gains from managing the entire hardware stack, suggesting an edge over standard commercial GPUs. The timing of this hardware release, following closely after an update on Meta’s generative AI projects, marks a strategic move by the company.

Interestingly, Meta disclosed that the new MTIA chip is not currently used for generative AI training but noted ongoing exploratory programs in this area. The chip is intended to augment, rather than replace, GPUs for model training and operation.

Facing the necessity to reduce expenses, Meta is looking towards in-house hardware solutions as it anticipates spending approximately $18 billion on GPUs for AI model training and operation by the end of 2024. Meta’s rapid development cycle for the new MTIA chip, from initial design to production in less than nine months, underscores its urgency in catching up with rivals and reducing reliance on external GPU solutions.
